Fully researched Devon based home improvement companies that we use and you should know about.

The benefit of spending 13 years in Devon working in Interior Design, Architecture and Project Management, is the extensive exposure we have had to a large number of local businesses, tradespeople and suppliers. These are the cream of the crop, companies who we know and trust when it comes to executing the smooth build and fit-out of any residential or commercial design project.

We have worked with the best, and the worst, and have the scars to prove it! Our strong project management team, have gained more than enough experience – both good and bad –  to know that any design and build or home improvement project is only as successful as the contractors, tradespeople and suppliers they work with!

This is why we would like to share with you the top 7 Devon based home improvement companies that we feel will help, not hinder, your journey when it comes to creating your interior design vision.

Once you have settled on an overall design – through Yellow Brick Road Design hopefully! – for your new build, extension or renovation, it is critical that you bring on board the right team to help you transform those plans into a reality while keeping within the parameters of budget, deadlines and dates.

1. CONTRACTOR

Devon based home improvement

The first port of call and one of the most important decisions is the appointment of the main contractor. This company will be your main point of contact ( if you are doing self project management ) and is the one area where trust and transparency are of the utmost importance. The largest proportion of your budget will be funnelled this way so you need to know that for the duration of the build, due care and attention will be adhered to at every step of the way.

Welstead is a Devon based construction business breathing fresh air into the South Hams residential building industry. Owner Rory Watson (a chartered surveyor by training) whose previous London business Capstone built houses for stars, the royal household, and oligarchs, has teamed up with a revered local builder, Steve Pengelly, and together they form an impressive mix combining impeccable project management and coordination skills with hands-on, fabled building knowledge. Their straightforward and affable approach is based on transparency and integrity between client and contractor. They are very cost focused, come up with lots of smart ideas and solutions but their is no compromise on quality.

With an ethical business ethos and a firm environmental touch Welstead bring a fresh, communicative and problem solving approach to each and every project.

2. BESPOKE JOINERY

With every unique one-off build comes the element of personalisation and this is where the inclusion of a bespoke joinery item may be the perfect solution both from a space-saving point of view while simultaneously creating a more integrated and seamless solution.

We have worked with Goss Joinery for a number of years and never have they been anything but totally attentive and detail led. With a South Hams based workshop filled with skilled and experienced joinery craftspeople, there is no challenge to big that they will not undertake and execute with gusto. They manufacture a wide range of commercial and domestic bespoke joinery pieces and are open to discussion on design, details and finishes to create the perfect one-off solution.

Sustainability and environmental impact are important elements to their business, given their location in the beautiful Devon countryside, leading them to use woods from managed forests. With a welcoming can-do approach this is one manufacturer we are always happy to work with.

3. LIGHTING

When looking to create the perfect home or work environment the one area that should be considered at an early stage is lighting. Lighting, either natural or artificial, is a complex area that if considered within the early stages of the design can become the one subtle but defining factor that has the power to transform an interior, or exterior, space injecting life, character and atmosphere at all times of the day. While not every project may require it we nonetheless like to talk lighting levels and fixtures at the early stages rather than as an afterthought.

5. CARPETS & CURTAINS

Now comes the time to focus on the softer elements of your finishes pallet. What is the overall look and feel you are aiming to achieve? With an overload of images and inspiration at the swipe of a finger, it is easy to become somewhat overwhelmed! It is important to step back and look beyond the latest trends and fads. Instead, look to injecting your personality and ‘story’ into each space, this is what will ultimately render your space unique and welcoming. Nothing quite beats running those fingers through real textures and finishes, cross-matching and coordinating a solid finishes board before finally deciding on the overall pallet.

Moyseys Interiors Knightsbridge has over 40 years of experience fitting carpets, curtains, blinds and flooring in homes and businesses throughout South Devon. 6. THE WOW FACTOR

Folk Interiors: We recently came across this new addition to the Devon interiors landscape and to us, it is a breath of fresh air to have such a fresh, eclectic range of home accessories and furniture right at our doorstep. Folk Interiors is a family run business that relocated to Devon in February and we think it is one of the more uplifting things to have come out of 2021.

They bring with them not only a broad range of stylish Scandinavian inspired brands including HK Living, House Doctor and Shepherds of Sweden but also a strong ethos when it comes to sustainable living, a deep passion for interiors and a keen eye for a range of furniture, home accessories and finishing touches that will complete the final detailed for any home.

They are currently an online business but are looking to create a stylised showroom section where customers can ogle over their beautiful and diverse range of textures, textiles, furniture and home accessories.

I for one am looking forward to their latest shipment of bedding currently en route from Australia.

7. OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING

For so many of us, our outdoor space has become as much a focal point as our interior settings. Yellow Brick Road Design has been involved in the design of a number of residential and hospitality entertainment spaces and can see first-hand the benefits of not only the increased entertainment space but also the beauty of outdoor dining.  (See Our Definitive Guide to Successful Outdoor Entertainment Spaces )

Pepe Garden Furniture is a Devon based Outdoor Garden Furniture company that brings with them over 31 years of experience, design and manufacture that create an extensive and unique range of quality wooden garden furniture. Seasoned Chelsea Flower Show exhibitors, this well-considered and unique range of wooden garden furniture includes two and three-seat garden swings, garden chairs, including the Rowena rocking sunbed (as per the image…I never want to stand up again! ) benches and other seating, along with sunbeds and recliners, plus tables and chairs sets.

Their diverse and well-crafted range of garden furniture can be viewed at their showroom based outside Dartmouth, at garden shows listed on their website or purchased online. Yet another reason to make outdoor entertaining the new indoors.

We have one final name up our sleeve which we hope to be able to promote once they make the move to sunny Devon. A site foreman/joiner who has spent his career working for a lifetime of high-end residential fit out projects, including our very own apartment design in London’s Baynards, Notting Hill. A craftsman whose attention, level of detail and communication surpassed any we had come across over our combined 40 years in the industry – We look forward to many more joint ventures together.

And Finally…

Hopefully, some of these companies will help you shortcut the research required when looking to update your home and direct you towards pulling together a team that can help you manage and execute the perfect home improvement project.
